First time flying with Spirit Airlines.

I haven’t flown in about 5 years when I moved from Louisiana to California. We were in a rush and made some last minute plans to head over to the northeast. Our main mission was to go to DC for business reasons but thought why not do a little more.

Our plan was 4 cities in 7 days. We started looking at flights around a month out. My first choice is always Southwest they’re usually affordable and very pleasant flights. Well, unfortunately, SW was way too pricey at that time. Spirit, however, was cheap running only $88 per person. I had never flown with them but my wife had and she warned me of the small space and uncomfortable flight. I didn’t really mind since the flight was only about two hours.

The first bad experience was the app on checking in 24 hours before. It kept giving me an error message so I tried to email support. It finally fixed itself and I could check in before I even received a response from support.

We arrived at the airport about 3 hours before the flight. The check-in line was INSANE. So many people all clumped together you couldn’t tell who was in line or not. So they have machines to self-tag any checked in bags and pay for any upgrades. So you stand in line for that then stand in line to hand over your bag. That line takes a while as some people do not know how to follow instructions or directions on how the lines worked. Some people would get to the counter and trying to pay for extras. Also, get prepared for people to get to the counter and ask a lot of questions that could be found online or asked at the gate.

Once we got to the gate we had about an hour before boarding. When the staff announced the boarding of zone 1 literally everyone stood up in line. We were zone 3 and thought it was a little odd that so many people were zone 1. When we asked which zone was boarding they just said all zones. So instead of announcing it everyone just started boarding.

We had seats in the middle and aisle so it wasn’t too bad. The plane is VERY small compared to other flights I’ve been on. The seats are not the most comfortable seat at all. If you are flying for more than two hours I would certainly not recommend flying with Spirit. The seats do not recline and there is little leg and arm room.

They do offer snacks on board but be warned the costs are extremely over prices. We brought our own food and drinks and noticed we were not alone on doing this. You are allowed to bring 1 personal bag at no cost. On our flight, the check-in luggage costs were $60 per bag and can weigh no more than 40 pounds. The cost for luggage is per flight which was $30 totaling $60 for to and from. Make sure to pay during booking to save money and not pay ridiculous higher fees. It seems like they nickel and dime anywhere they can. They also charge for checking in at the counter instead of checking in online. They claim things like that keep costs low.
